SPOTLIGHT
STUDENTS & ALUMNI

Scott Seyforth, ELPA PhD Alum has helped produced a photography exhibit, The 602 Club in the Sixties, currently on view through July 27 in the Class of 1925 Gallery at the Memorial Union. The exhibit features rare interior images of the 602 Club taken by John Riggs between 1964 – 1968. During the 1950s and 60s, The 602 Club was one of the few public places LGBTQ folk could assemble in Madison, becoming a gathering place primarily for gay men.  The sixty images in this exhibit provide a rare glimpse into a Midwestern gay male gathering place in the mid-60s – prior to the Stonewall Rebellion. The Wisconsin Historical Society, the Chicago Gerber/Hart Archives, The Philadelphia John J. Wilcox, Jr. LGBT Archives, and The New York LGBT National History Archive do not have a similar collection of interior photos of bars where LGBTQ folk gathered from the 1960s. The exhibit is a product of Seyforth’s efforts in co-founding The Madison LGBTQ Archives, housed at University Archives. 

 
Gwendolyn Baxley, ELPA PhD student was one of four UW-Madison PhD students selected from a pool of 600 applicants to receive a NAEd/Spencer Dissertation Fellowship
Dr. Anupama Shekar (ELPA PhD Alum) shares her story of following her passion for ensuring equitable access to quality education, no matter a child’s economic circumstance, and how it took her from a career in journalism in India, to post-doctoral research in the U.S. Her work has featured a long history of working with qualitative research and evaluation tools, including NVivo. 

From journalism to research and evaluation: a research journey

She is currently an Evaluation Consultant with the Center on Research and Evaluation at the Simmons School of Education and Human Development at the Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas, Texas.
