UW-Madison's Baxley to present during webinar on mentoring graduate students

July 11, 2018
UW-Madison's Gwendolyn Baxley will be presenting during a webinar hosted by the University Council for Educational Administration's (UCEA) Graduate Student Council (GSC) titled, "Finishing Strong: Navigating the Last Stage of Doctoral Work."

Baxley
Baxley is a Ph.D. student with the School of Education's Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis. She is a current NAEd/Spencer Dissertation Fellow, and is receiving $27,500 for a period of up to two years to complete her dissertation and attend professional development retreats.

For the webinar, Baxley, along with Joanna Sanchez, Darrius Stanley and Benterah C. Morton, will mentor graduate students on navigating the final stage of doctoral work, and the transition into their careers or professoriate and postdoctoral work.

In her work, Baxley researches educational spaces in which black youth and families survive, thrive and navigate, as well as the structures, practices and ideologies that either hinder or facilitate the development of spaces that are affirming and nurturing for black youth. Her NAEd/Spencer Dissertation Fellowship project is titled, "How School Leaders Make and Enact Meaning: A Qualitative Study of Racial Discourse, Opportunity and 'Humanity' in Community Schools."

The webinar will be held on Tuesday, July 17, from 2 to 3 p.m. Register here.
