2018 MSAN Institute: Call for proposals now open

December 19, 2017

The call for proposals is now open for the 2018 MSAN Institute, which is scheduled for April 26-27 at The Madison Concourse Hotel.

Housed within the School of Education’s Wisconsin Center for Education Research (WCER), the Minority Student Achievement Network (MSAN) is a national coalition of multiracial, mid-sized, suburban-urban school districts working to understand and eliminate the effects of institutionalized racism on student achievement.

2018 MSAN InstituteThe Institute, which is MSAN’s annual conference, is an intensive two-day professional learning opportunity dedicated to sharing cutting-edge strategies for eliminating racial achievement and opportunity gaps in schools.

Two areas of practice frame this goal: developing equity-focused leadership practices, and building cultural competence.

Each year, MSAN invites staff and volunteers from its member districts, community partners currently working with MSAN districts, researchers and others to facilitate 75-minute breakout sessions at the Institute. MSAN Institute breakout sessions highlight practices for classroom teachers, building- or district-level decision makers, and family engagement leaders. Sessions may outline current initiatives as well as inform future research.

Proposals are reviewed by members of the Institute's planning team using the following criteria: clarity of proposal; richness of learning objectives; level of participant engagement (how learners interact with the content and with each other during the session through varied activities and collaborative learning (see https://learningforward.org/standards/learning-designs); and alignment with focus of the MSAN Institute and MSAN's mission and goals, including student leadership (see http://msan.wceruw.org/about/index.html).

Session descriptions should be submitted using this electronic submission form no later than Jan. 19. Submitters will be contacted in early February.

If you have additional questions, contact the MSAN office at msan@wcer.wisc.edu or 608-890-4638.
