Winkle-Wagner co-authors paper examining 'Black Women Faculty Members’ Journeys Toward Tenure'

July 05, 2017

UW-Madison’s Rachelle Winkle-Wagner and Loyola University Chicago’s Bridget Turner Kelly co-authored a paper for the most recent edition of the Teachers College Record that is headlined, “Finding a Voice in Predominantly White Institutions: A Longitudinal Study of Black Women Faculty Members’ Journeys Toward Tenure.”

Winkle-Wagner is an associate professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis, and a faculty affiliate of the Wisconsin Center for the Advancement of Postsecondary Education.

The paper focuses on research that explores how black women experience the tenure process at predominantly white institutions of higher education, and how this affects the recruitment and retention of black women faculty members.

During the study, researchers collected qualitative longitudinal data by conducting interviews with black women faculty members in two different predominantly white research universities every year for five years.

The study's findings, explored in the paper, show that black women used their voices inside and outside their academic programs, despite being the only person of color.

"Finding and using their voices in the academy became a way to push back and resist some of the isolation and racism that the women experienced in the academy, and often the women did so in collectivist spaces with other Black women," said Winkle-Wagner and Turner Kelly in their paper's findings.
