UW-Madison's Hillman, Bruecker quoted in Inside Higher Ed

UW-Madison's Nicholas Hillman and Ellie Bruecker were quoted in an article from Inside Higher Ed about how the removal of a certain IRS tool for FAFSA applicants affects college students and application rates.

The full article, "IRS Debacle Sows Confusion, Hassles," is posted on the Inside Higher Ed website.

The IRS removed a data-removal tool that allowed users to automatically import their family's ​income information into FAFSA, reported Inside Higher Ed. Together, Hillman and Bruecker have tracked the effects of the tool's removal. 

Overall, there has been a slowdown in FAFSA applications. Hillman said although it's hard to directly tie the tool's removal to the application, it certainly doesn't help. 

Hillman is an associate professor with the School of Education's Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis. He studies higher education finance and policy, and his research focuses on how policies affect educational access and success. Hillman also is a faculty affiliate with UW-Madison's La Follette School of Public Affairs, and is a Wisconsin Center for the Advancement of Postsecondary Education (WISCAPE) faculty affiliate.

Bruecker is a Ph.D. student with the School of Education’s Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis.
