UW-Madison alum Dortch launching program to support African-American doctoral students

April 13, 2017

UW-Madison alumna Deniece Dortch is starting an initiative at the University of Utah that's designed to support African-American doctoral students.

Dortch received a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis from UW-Madison’s School of education in 2016. Dortch today is the program manager for the African-American Doctoral Scholars Initiative and a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Utah.

“Many African-American doctoral students are only prepared to conduct research upon graduating,” Dortch said in a University of Utah press release. “We recognize these gaps and want students to be competitive on the job market once they complete their degrees. This program provides students with a network of peers, mentors and professional development workshops to set them up for success.”

Dortch's research focuses on understanding how African-American undergraduate and graduate students experience and respond to race and racism at predominantly white institutions of higher education, the press release reports.

The African-American Doctoral Scholars Initiative will begin in the fall of 2017.

Dortch is also chairing a state-wide summit on Black Issues in the state of Utah, which will be the first of its kind. To learn more about the summit, check out this PBS interview
