Master's Roadmap

Complete A Program Plan

The student’s program plan is to be developed in consultation with your department advisor.  The program plan is signed by the student and advisor and is then submitted to the Department of approval.   Program plans may be changed with advisor approval.

Credit/GPA Requirements

Overall, Master’s students must take 30 credits of course work, distributed across the categories indicated on the program plan. At least 16 credits of the total program have to be UW-Madison course work.

No more than six (6) credits of special student course work are applicable toward degree requirements.   Once you become a graduate student, you can no longer take courses as a special student.

The student must maintain a minimum overall GGPA of 3.00 in educational administration coursework between admission and the completion of the degree.

Degree Completion

K-12 Leadership Strand

All students seeking University endorsement for initial licensure as a K-12 administrator from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction must complete a portfolio based on Wisconsin State standards for administrators. Students seeking licensure who are also officially admitted to the Master’s degree program in ELPA, AND are completing the course requirements for the ELPA Master’s degree program must submit a portfolio as well.  The portfolio meets the requirements for both certification and the Master's degree.

Policy Strand

All students in the policy strand must submit a thesis paper.

Higher, Postsecondary and Continuing Education Strand

All students in the HPCE strand must complete a capstone project.
